Load-bearing wall removal

Open a wall, connect rooms or create an open-plan living space. We check your building and design the beam, supports and strengthening needed for your project.

More than a beam calculation.

Removing a load-bearing wall changes how loads pass through the building. The new beam must be checked together with its supports and the structure beneath them.

What we check

  • Loads from above: roof, floors and walls supported by the opening.
  • The replacement structure: beam strength, deflection, connections and bearing areas.
  • Supports below: remaining walls, columns and foundations receiving the redistributed loads.
  • Overall stability: whether the wall also helps resist horizontal forces.

We use available drawings and a site visit. Concealed construction may require further investigation before the design is finalised.

Which solution fits your project?

The choice depends on the opening width, loads, wall construction, available height and access for installation.

Steel beams
A single beam or a designed pair. Paired beams require suitable connections and verified load sharing.
Cast-in-place concrete
A reinforced beam poured on site. Allow for formwork, temporary support and concrete strength development.
Timber beams
Solid or engineered timber where suitable. Beam depth, deflection, connections and fire performance influence the choice.
Precast concrete
A prefabricated beam or lintel with adequate capacity and bearings. Installation access and manufacturer requirements must be checked.
Frame and columns
Where the remaining walls cannot support the new loads. Foundation strengthening may also be necessary.

Plan the temporary support.

The building must remain stable while the wall is being altered. Shoring or propping must be designed for the loads and supported by a suitable structure below.

Before demolition: agree the temporary-support design, installation sequence and responsibilities with the contractor.

Our proposal specifies the temporary-works services included and whether a specialist designer is required. Unexpected site conditions must be reviewed before work continues.

What you receive.

A project-specific structural study based on the applicable Eurocodes and Belgian National Annexes, with deliverables defined in your quotation.

  • Calculations for the affected structural elements.
  • Structural drawings, beam and support details.
  • Construction requirements, assumptions and items to verify.
  • Explanations and answers to your contractor’s questions about our design.

Additional site visits and checks can be included in the agreed scope.

Study first. Reduce unexpected costs.

Identifying constraints before demolition gives contractors a clearer basis for pricing and planning. It helps reduce the risk of work stoppages, unsuitable beam orders, damage and unplanned strengthening, although hidden conditions can still affect the work.

Planning an opening?

Send the property location, approximate opening width, photographs and any available plans. We will review your request and define the study you need.
